Dr. Alessandro Capo

Dr. Alessandro Capo earned his Ph.D. in System Biology from the University of Salerno, Italy, in 2016. He currently holds a permanent position as a Research Technician at the Institute of Food Sciences, Italian National Research Council (ISA-CNR) in Avellino, Italy. Dr. Capo’s research focuses on the development of biosensors for food safety, health diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. His work includes the design and optimization of optical (fluorescence-based) and impedimetric biosensors, as well as the identification and characterization of molecular recognition elements (MREs) and immunological assays. Throughout his career, Dr. Capo has contributed to several major EU-funded projects, including GRACED (Ultracompact, low-cost plasmo-photonic bimodal multiplexing sensor platforms), SWINOSTIC (Swine diseases field diagnostics toolbox), and MARIABOX (Marine environmental in situ monitoring toolbox). He has also been involved in national initiatives such as SAFE&SMART (New technologies for food safety) and CISIA (Integrated Knowledge for Sustainability and Innovation of Italian Agro-Food Systems). Prior to his current position, Dr. Capo held postdoctoral research roles at ISA-CNR, the Armand Frappier Research Centre in Montreal, Canada, and the Institute of Protein Biochemistry (IBP-CNR) in Naples, where he contributed to key projects including DESIRED (Nanotechnology platform for early cancer detection). Dr. Capo has co-authored 25 peer-reviewed publications and regularly contributes to the scientific community, including as a reviewer for journals like Plos One. His work bridges the fields of biosensors, nanotechnology, and environmental science, aiming to develop innovative solutions for global challenges in food safety, health, and environmental monitoring.
