Dr. Claudio Parolo

Associate Researcher at the University of Barcelona

Dr. Claudio Parolo is an expert in biosensor technology and rapid diagnostic tests. He holds a degree in Biotechnology from the University of Padova and a PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he focused on sustainable paper-based platforms for biosensors. After completing postdoctoral research at University College London, developing lateral flow assays for infectious diseases like Influenza, HIV, and Ebola, Dr. Parolo continued his work as a Beatriu de Pinós fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara, focusing on electrochemical aptamer-based and DNA-scaffold sensors. He then joined the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology under a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship, where he innovated paper-based diagnostic platforms such as lateral flow assays and DNA-based sensors integrated into paper electrodes.
Currently, Dr. Parolo is an Associate Researcher at the University of Barcelona, working on the development of rapid diagnostic tests for travel medicine. His research focuses on using lateral flow assays and electrochemical sensors to detect diseases like malaria, strongyloidiasis, and dengue. Dr. Parolo’s pioneering work is advancing affordable and accessible diagnostic technologies, with a strong emphasis on global health challenges.
